Details to collect before replacing hardware
Collect accessible door and product information before shopping for replacement hardware. Accurate preparation helps prevent choosing a lock that looks right but cannot fit the opening.

Record the opening as it exists
Note the door material, approximate thickness and whether the current hardware is a separate deadbolt, a knob or lever, a mortise assembly or another arrangement. Keep visible brand and model information. Mention unusual trim, a narrow door rail, glass panels or a nearby storm door. Do not dismantle a working lock solely to measure it when that could leave the property unsecured.
Understand the important terms
Backset describes the distance from the door edge to the center of the lock preparation. Bore refers to a prepared hole, and door thickness affects which components can fit through the opening. The actual acceptable dimensions come from the chosen product’s installation instructions. There is no single measurement set for every residential, commercial and specialty lock, so avoid ordering from an approximate visual comparison alone.
Include function and condition
Record whether the door closes smoothly, the bolt reaches the strike and the handle has adequate clearance. Explain the intended inside and outside operation as well as the desired finish. For rentals or businesses, confirm authorization and required review before alterations. See lock installation, mortise locks and smart lock fit for different preparation needs. Existing damage should be assessed before a replacement is treated as a simple swap.
Arrange the next step
Ask WVC Locksmith to review the hardware request with the door description and proposed model. Keep purchased parts, packaging and instructions available. Confirm compatibility and any additional preparation before drilling, removing material or committing to a replacement that cannot be returned.
