Metal keys, transponders and proximity fobs

Key shape does not explain every vehicle function. A metal blade, a transponder and a remote or proximity fob may perform different jobs within the same key set.

Describe functions rather than guessing a category

Does your key enter an ignition, stay in your pocket for starting or use buttons to unlock? Is there a removable blade inside the fob? These observations help identify the request without assuming that every plastic-headed key is the same. Opening a mechanical door lock and receiving electronic authorization to start are separate functions, even when the same item normally does both.

Explain the failure precisely

A remote that no longer unlocks the doors is not the same symptom as a key that turns but does not start the car. Note whether a second key works and whether the vehicle displays a message. A no-start can also involve something other than a key. Avoid buying a new fob solely because a broad online description calls it a transponder or smart key.

Confirm the replacement requirements

The year, make, model and compatible part determine the useful next step. Ask which physical and electronic functions the replacement will support, whether a blade is included and how the result will be tested. Programming requirements vary by vehicle; a general tutorial cannot establish a procedure for your car. Related services include transponder keys, fob replacement and spare keys.

Arrange the next step

Tell WVC Locksmith how your existing key works and which function you need restored. Keep any remaining key available for identification and testing. We check the individual vehicle and parts before confirming service rather than relying on the name printed in an online listing.
