Making a simple home lock inventory

A home lock inventory turns several uncertain doors into a clear service request. Use simple door names, record current operation and keep the completed list private.

List openings, then keyed components

Start with the front, rear and side entries, then the garage pedestrian door and detached storage where relevant. A door with a keyed handle and a separate deadbolt has more than one keyed component. Note whether each uses the same current key. Add patio and sliding doors by their actual style rather than assuming they use the same hardware as the front entrance.

Record condition without creating a fault

Mark loose handles, a bolt that binds, a key that catches or a door that rubs. Use what you already observe; do not close an open faulty door just to test whether it will trap you outside. Keep lock brands or model information where accessible. Do not include key cuts, active entry codes, hidden spare locations or alarm credentials in an inventory that may be shared for a quote.

Turn the list into a goal

Choose whether the project is changing access, repairing problems, matching keys or adding new features. Different goals can involve different work on the same door. A smart lock may also need an account and code review separate from its physical key. Use the list with residential locksmith service and compare rekeying with replacement. Shared building and mailbox hardware should have a separate authorization note.

Arrange the next step

Send WVC Locksmith a short summary with the door count, main problems and property location. Keep the detailed inventory for the service discussion. An authorized person can use it at handover to check that the agreed doors, key groups and repairs have all been addressed.
