A lock checklist after moving

A move is a useful time to review physical keys and digital access together. Start with an inventory of actual entrances rather than automatically replacing every piece of hardware.

Walk the property once

List the front, back and side entrances, garage pedestrian door and any detached storage included in the property. Note which key opens each lock and which key sets were handed over. Include an occupied shared entrance or mailbox only as a separate item needing the responsible manager’s permission. Record lock condition too: a key-access change will not correct a door that rubs or fails to latch.

Separate access changes from repairs

For suitable compatible locks, move-in rekeying can change which physical key works. Broken hardware or a desired keypad may call for replacement or installation. Different keyways can limit the goal of having one key for every door. Ask which cylinders can remain and which problems need attention before selecting finishes or ordering a complete hardware set.

Include connected devices and handover

If a smart lock is present, identify its model and arrange an authorized account handover using the manufacturer’s instructions. Review codes, app users and any connected access separately from the physical key. Do not post active codes in a service request. Decide who should receive the new keys and whether contractors need temporary access. Keep keys and account changes recorded privately so the new access arrangement is understandable after the move.

Arrange the next step

Send WVC Locksmith a move-in request with the approximate door count, lock condition and timing. An authorized person should provide entry and accept the finished keys. Our home lock inventory guide can help turn the walkthrough into a clear service scope.
